We invite you to our International Microorganism Day events in Portugal, the birthplace of IMD!
IMD @ Aveiro
Did you know that there is an invisible world formed by a multitude of microbes, on which we depend? Although they have been faced as terrible threats, we know today about their crucial role in our health, environemnt and quality of living. There is really an increadible living microscopic world! The Fábrica, CESAM, and the Department of Biology of the Universidade de Aveiro invite you to come and find it, during the International Microorganism Day!

The day was a success! Several curious visitors of all ages attended the sessions! The day was closed by a pannel discussion Café com Ciência “Microorganisms: heros or villains?” with Adelaide Almeida, Artur Alves and Tânia Caetano, researches of @cesam_univ and of the Department of Biology at @universidadedeaveiro
IMD @ BioLab Lisboa
On the 17th September we celebrated International Microorganism Day at BioLab in Lisbon! The event was targeted for the general public and we were happy to see many families attend and learn about microbes!
Our event was composed of 4 hands-on activities were kids could experiment with swabbing surfaces, culturing microbes, observing microbes on plates, preparing microscope slides and observing microbes under microscope. We also had a short talk by a microbiologist on the impact of microbes in human health and on the daily life of a microbiologist.
IMD @ ITQB NOVA

How are microorganisms related to the beach and the sea? Find out on September 17th, the International Microorganism Day. From 4 pm to 7 pm, the wonderful world of microorganisms will be on display at Caxias beach, Oeiras, in a Sunset with Science.
Amongst microscopy observations, demos and talks with ITQB NOVA researchers, we have several activities to explore the science of microorganisms. Find out more about the latest scientific developments based on marine organisms and its microbiota, namely for the development of new drugs against diseases caused by microorganisms. There will be surprises for all ages, challenges for the kids and the must-see DJ E. coli.

IMD @ Pavilhão do Conhecimento - Centro Ciencia VIva
On September 17th, Pavilhão do Conhecimento – Centro Ciência Viva, celebrated the International Microorganism Day with activities for visitors of all ages. With the theme “Antibiotic resistance: a macro-challenge”, join your crew and save the new antibacterial compound in our Escape Room, or have a chat with research teams on the topic. The youngsters can built their own microbe and learn more about antibiotics in fun lab experiments. Enjoy an interesting round-table of specialists that will discuss the challenge of antibiotic resistance and what can we do to surpass it.

IMD @ Universidade Católica Portuguesa
On 23rd September 2022 we held an IMD event at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia, Universidade Católica Portuguesa. This was a science fair-like event organized outdoors and we were so happy to welcome over 500 attendees between the ages of 10-18!
We had dozens of mini-activities related to microorganisms from all areas in the environment (water, and soil), in food (food production and food safety), in health (gut and skin microbiome) etc.
All the attendees and intervenients were unanimous saying that our event was a success and loved the concept of the outdoor fair! The major feedback from students about our event were: "fun", "happiness", "I learn a lot, in a different way", "enriching", "thank you", "You helped us to make a decision for the future", and "We hope to come back".
IMD @ The Radio
On the 17th September 2022, IMD went on the radio! For the whole 24 hours people could tune in on Rádio Universidade de Coimbra – RUC 107.9 FM and hear microbiologists from Coimbra sharing tfhe freshest news from the world of microbiology.

IMD will be celebrated at Academia de Ciências de Lisboa with a full day dedicated to Microorganisms and Sustainable Development.
