International Microorganism Day / Dia Internacional do Microrganismo

Welcome to IMD 2018

The 2018 International Microorganism Day (IMD) will be organized on the 17th of September as an initiative of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM), in collaboration with Ordem dos Biólogos, Ciência Viva Agency, the Portuguese Society of Ecology and the high patronage of the Portuguese National Commision for UNESCO. This year, the program counts with the collaboration of the Portuguese Microbiological Resource Center Network and the Spanish Microbiology Society. The activities organized by SPM will take place at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), Portugal, in connection to diverse activities organized around Portugal and Europe, promoted by several Microbiology Societies associated to FEMS (Federation of the European Microbiology Societies), that, together with the European Culture Collection Organization (ECCO) and the International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME), sponsors the event.

This Day’s celebrations aim to disseminate and promote Microbiology as a field of professional activities, and to raise awareness among young people and the society in general on the essencial role that a multitude of invisible living beings plays in our health, environment and quality of life, as well as of their biotechnological potential.

O Dia Internacional do Microrganismo 2018 (IMD) terá lugar no dia 17 de Setembro, numa iniciativa da Sociedade Portuguesa de Microbiologia (SPM), em colaboração com a Ordem dos Biólogos, a Agência Ciência Viva, a Sociedade Portuguesa de Ecologia e com o alto patrocínio da Comissão Nacional da UNESCO-Portugal. Este ano contamos ainda com a colaboração da Rede Nacional de Recursos Microbiológicos e a Sociedade Espanhola de Microbiologia. As actividades organizadas pela SPM serão realizadas no Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), em articulação com diversas actividades organizadas no país e pela Europa, promovidas por várias Sociedades de Microbiologia associadas à FEMS (Federation of the European Microbiology Societies), que, com a European Culture Collection Organization (ECCO) e a International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME), patrocina o evento.

As celebrações deste dia têm por objetivo divulgar e promover a Microbiologia como área de atividade profissional e consciencializar os jovens e a sociedade em geral para o papel essencial que uma multidão invisível de seres vivos muito diversos desempenha na nossa saúde, ambiente e qualidade de vida, bem como as suas potencialidades biotecnológicas.
