IMD in Indonesia

A few IMD events are being hosted in Indonesia this year! See details below for more information.

Microbial Odyssey: Exploring Nature’s Microscopic Wonders

When: 21 - 22 September 2024

Where: Ganesha Campus, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)

As the first ever IMD to be held in Indonesia, the event’s purpose is to provide a platform for microorganism enthusiasts around Bandung City to share their passion and knowledge of microorganisms in our everyday lives. Under the banner of “Microbial Odyssey: Exploring Nature’s Microscopic Wonders”, our event aims to take attendees on an interactive journey into the world of microbes–from its very beginning until it became the powerhouse of the technology we made today. It is not just about imparting knowledge, but about the spirit to create an immersive experience that brings the microscopic wonders of nature to life. Those spirits are embodied in a series of workshops, community stage, symposium, microbial art exhibition, as well as collaborative activities with various disciplines.

Format:

Workshop (Pre-Event)

Our workshop will be focusing on petri dish art creation. It aims to give a sneak peek into the fun and exciting side of microbiology, particularly targeting participants who enjoy creating unique art. Serving as pre-event, this workshop also functions as a promotional platform for the main event. Selected works will be showcased on the main event exhibition.

Seminar and symposium

The Symposium is designed to be the core of up-to date microbiology exploration for attendees. It will consist of three sessions, each featuring 2-3 distinct speakers. These speakers will present their past or ongoing research that is relevant to the designated topic. The invited speakers include researchers from ITB and domestic and international partners. Possible topics include the microbiome, microbes in health, petroleum microbiology, etc. Topics are subject to change. Festival (Community Stage) Festival will host a variety of booths from scientific organizations, communities, alumni start-ups, and other microbiology-related partners, serving as a platform for showcasing work and broadening organizational outreach. Designed as a hub for idea exchange and collaboration, the festival's main stage will feature community-led workshops, engaging activity for participants, and informative talk shows. To ensure visitor comfort, the festival will also feature a leisure area and a selection of booths offering healthy cuisine. The fusion of insightful content and the vibrant festival atmosphere aims to foster and promote innovation in the microbiology sector.

Microbial Art Exhibition

The Microbial Art Exhibition will showcase a collection of unique original works by members of the “Archaea” Microbiology Student Association of ITB, in collaboration with partner organizations, student associations, and institutions. Each artwork follows a specific theme that guiding visitors on a narrative journey from the beginning to the end of exhibition. The exhibition’s theme, “Beyond the Scope”, represents organisms typically observed under microscopes, ranging from the tiniest microorganisms like viruses to visible organisms such as fungi and lichens.

Through exhibition and interactive activities, participants not only act as visitors, but also act as active contributors to the exhibition experience. Displayed will include petri dish art, paintings inspired by microbes’ shapes, mold spore stamp artworks, patchwork arrangements that resembles the growth of fungi and mold, etc. One of the interactive activities will provide visitors with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of observing microorganisms under a microscope. The aim of the exhibits and interactive activities is to create an immersive learning environment that encourages visitors to actively explore the world of microbiology.

Let’s become fungal – Fungi Book Club in Jakarta

Where: POST Bookshop (TBC)

We are thrilled to announce an upcoming book discussion on the non-fiction book “Let’s Become Fungal!” by Yasmine Ostendorf-Rodriguez.

This event will focus on selected chapters from the book, which uniquely offer ways to think about and engage with fungi in a communal manner, as well as inspire people to experiment with fungal mycelium and engage with fungi.

Objective:

  • Short term: raise awareness about fungi.

  • Long term: create a community of praxis around fungi in Jakarta

There will be short presentation from the speaker, and then open discussion. Very informal and friendly and open to everyone. The Bad Bugs Book Club is our inspiration and patron/mentor

We have had two previous Fungi Book Club session, both in person and online, and this will be similar. Link to the event on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/jakarta-creatives/events/301193641
