IMD in Italy
“Dal passato al futuro: il multiforme mondo dei microbi.”
(“From the past to the future: the multifaceted world of microbes.”)
When: 17 September 2024, 10:00 a.m. CEST (participants’ registration since 9:30 a.m. CEST)
Where: Department of Biological, geological and Environmental Sciences – Corso Italia, 57 – Catania (Italy)
In 2024 IMD edition, the themes will range from cultural heritage, both in terms of biodeterioration phenomena and bioremoval, to antibiotic resistance, without neglecting a look at parasites.
Microbes have developed robust skills as colonisers, no matter how extreme an environment can be. They do appreciate ancient frescoes, they find museums an interesting ecological niche, or they can grab on graffiti and help us to clean walls! Live animals and soils are lovely niches for microbes too, also thanks to their ability of sharing information on antibiotic resistance. Come and discover the multifaceted world of microbes.
Objective:
Since the first edition of the International Microorganism Day in Catania, our goal has been to showcase that microbes have a key role on earth. Our wish is to disrupt the common equation that simply equals microbes to pathogenic agents. Thus, from year to year, we have explored unusual examples of microbial niches.
From Urban Biodiversity to Human Health (MeetMeTonight 2024)
When: 28 September 2024, 10:00 am - 10:00 pm
Where: University of Milano-Bicocca
The proposed initiative is framed in the broader MeetMeTonight 2024 event, aka the Researcher’s Night (https://www.meetmetonight.it/2024/). The event consists of booths and areas dedicated to educational activities related to scientific research. We have been selected to stage an educational stand that will be organized as a journey along the links between animal (humans included) and environmental health through informative and interactive activities.
Adopting the One Health principles, we will offer a comprehensive perspective of biodiversity, valorizing the often neglected microbial one and identifying small everyday actions that can influence our health.
Objective:
Allow the population to have one-on-one interaction with the people behind Milan’s research institutions (all Milan universities cooperate to present their research). Our goal is to promote awareness of Urban Biodiversity, driven by the core concept that Biodiversity entails all organisms, from macro- to the micro- scale. Take-home messages concern biodiversity roles in ecosystem services, urban areas, and malnutrition.
