Microorganisms and Society (Técnico, ULisboa) – On September 17, 2019, the commemorations of the International Microorganism Day at Técnico Lisboa, Campus Alameda also nvolved the session “Microorganisms and Society” with talks on the role of microorganisms in our society.

Speakers from the companies A4F-Algae for Future, Technophage, and Cerveja Oitava Colina, brought the notion of the impact of microorganisms and microbiology in industry. Members from the microbiology scientific community from ULisboa (Técnico, Faculdade de Farmácia, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária, Instituto Superior de Agronomia, INESC-ID) and from Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHMT-Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical and ITQB-NOVA) were also among the invited speakers.

Skype Call by  15h30 was included in this session to connect the IMD commemoration events, taking place in Portugal and around the world. The skype call was conducted by the President of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology, Professor Isabel Sá-Correia and the skype calls´program included: Centros Ciência Viva (CCV Algarve, Galeria da Biodiversidade and Exploratório Coimbra), the FEMS Office (Joseph Shuttleworth that gave some insights on the FEMS suport on Social Media Managment for IMD) and a FEMS Summer School for Microbiology Education (taking place in Greece, a talk with Joana Verran, FEMS delegate), and several activities taking place across Portugal (IST-Microorganisms in the Garden, ITQB-NOVA, UMinho, and Arco Rua Augusta). Unfortunately, the programmed call to Universidade Federal de Lavras, Brasil, could not be established.
